The Junior Staff Director (JSD) is responsible for leading and mentoring the Junior Staff throughout the summer. The Junior Staff consists of 3–6 high school-aged campers that rotate each camp session. This role combines leadership, mentorship, spiritual guidance, and logistical management.
While the role includes various physical and supervisory tasks, the primary function of the JRD is to build relationships, lead daily Bible studies, and mentor the Junior Staff in diligence and spiritual growth.
The JRD reports directly to the Food Service Director, with ultimate accountability to the Camp Manager.
• Create and manage daily schedules for work, devotionals, activities, and breaks.
• Ensure fair rotation among kitchen and recreational assignments.
• Coordinate schedules with the Food Service Director, LSCA Management, and camp Dean’s office.
• Welcome incoming Junior Staff participants each session.
• Conduct orientation covering responsibilities, schedule, and camp culture.
• Lead daily Bible studies with Junior Staff.
• Provide ongoing encouragement and spiritual mentorship.
• Engage the staff in activities that strengthen their faith and challenge them personally.
• Oversee dishwashing after breakfast (pots, dishes, silverware, etc.).
• Sweep and mop the dining hall as needed (after breakfast/lunch and daily after dinner).
• Empty trash as needed; ensure all trash is removed and taken to the dumpster each evening.
• Supervise and assist Junior Staff in all assigned duties.
• Support Discovery Camp activities and help set up recreation events.
• Oversee the Junior Staff’s canteen responsibilities (serving, restocking, cleaning).
• Keep inventory of needed supplies.
• Ensure outdoor canteen area is clean and orderly after each session.
• Assist in full camp cleanup, beginning with the Dining Hall/Kitchen and moving to other areas as needed.
• Clearly explain expectations for each role to Junior Staff members.
• Coordinate with the program scheduler to ensure Junior Staff contributions are helpful and not burdensome to program staff.
• Be proactive, organized, and spiritually grounded.
• Be creative in engaging with high school students to inspire growth and commitment.
• Lead by example in work ethic, attitude, and faith.
