Faculty Readiness Overview

Serving at LSCA is both a privilege and a responsibility. Every member of our faculty plays a vital role in creating a safe, Christ-centered environment where campers can grow in faith and character.

Before joining us for the summer, each faculty member must complete the following steps to ensure readiness and compliance:

  1. Background Check – conducted through Ministry Mobilizer and verified by LSCA.
  2. DCFS Mandated Reporter Training – completed online through the Illinois DCFS portal.
  3. LSCA-Specific Faculty Training – completed annually through in-person or Zoom sessions.

These steps not only fulfill state requirements but reflect LSCA’s ongoing commitment to integrity, accountability, and excellence in ministry.

We appreciate your willingness to serve — and your dedication to helping us maintain the safest, most meaningful camp experience possible for every camper who steps onto our grounds.

Background Check

At LSCA, the safety and well-being of our campers is our top priority. Before joining our faculty team, every prospective staff member must complete a background check. This is not only required by the State of Illinois, but it also helps us maintain a secure and trustworthy environment for all campers.

Note: During the background check process through Ministry Mobilizer, you may notice terms like “employment,” “employee,” or “employer.” These are part of their standard system wording. LSCA uses this same platform for volunteers and summer faculty, and these terms do not indicate an employment relationship.

Steps to Complete Your Background Check

  1. Submit Your Background Check Through Ministry Mobilizer
    • We use Ministry Mobilizer to simplify the process.
    • You’ll provide your personal information and fingerprints through their secure system.
    • Once submitted, Ministry Mobilizer notifies LSCA that your paperwork is complete.
  2. LSCA Verification
    • After notification, LSCA staff run the background check internally.
    • You must pass the background check to be fully cleared to serve as faculty.

Ongoing Compliance

  • Background checks are valid for two years.
  • LSCA will notify you when it’s time to renew so your record stays current.
  • Keeping your background check up to date ensures that we remain compliant with state regulations and maintain a safe environment for all campers.

Helpful Tips for Faculty

  • Start the Ministry Mobilizer process early — it can potentially take several weeks for verification.
  • Keep a personal copy of your verification in case any questions arise.
  • LSCA staff are available to help if you run into questions or delays.

For Faculty and Counselors Under 18

Volunteers under the age of 18 are not eligible for a standard criminal background check. Instead, they must complete the Camp Counselor and Faculty Questionnaire for Minors, which includes both a personal disclosure section and a parental consent and medical release form.

By completing and signing this document, the parent or guardian grants permission for the minor to serve as faculty or counselor at LSCA and acknowledges understanding of the responsibilities and expectations involved.

This form must be filled out and returned to LSCA staff — either by email or in personbefore the camp session begins. Minors may not serve in any faculty capacity until this document has been received and reviewed.

Minors serving in faculty or counselor roles will always be paired with an adult faculty member while working directly with campers, and are expected to uphold the same standards of conduct, confidentiality, and ministry excellence as all other faculty.

DCFS Training

The State of Illinois requires all individuals working or volunteering in youth camp settings to complete DCFS Mandated Reporter Training. This training ensures that everyone serving at LSCA understands how to recognize, respond to, and report any signs of child abuse or neglect.

While the state recognizes the DCFS training as valid for three years, LSCA requires it to be renewed every two years. This keeps your records current and ensures all faculty are up to date with the latest reporting standards — and it aligns with our background check renewal schedule.

Steps to Complete Your DCFS Training

  1. Complete the Online DCFS Mandated Reporter Training
    • Visit the official Illinois DCFS Mandated Reporter Training Portal.
    • When prompted to select your Mandated Reporter Role, choose:
“Child Care” → “Recreational Program Personnel.”
    • The training takes approximately 60–90 minutes and covers identifying and reporting child abuse, neglect, and other safety concerns.
    • Upon completion, you will receive a digital certificate of completion.
  2. Submit Your Certificate to LSCA
    • Once the training is finished, email your certificate to both of the following addresses:
      aaron@lscacamp.org and pvinyard@lscacamp.org
    • LSCA staff will verify and record your completion.
    • Training must be renewed every two years, regardless of the DCFS three-year standard.

Ongoing Compliance

  • LSCA keeps all training records on file for compliance and safety purposes.
  • When you are selected or invited to serve as faculty again, you will be directed to this webpage to complete or renew your required steps — including this DCFS training.
  • This ensures all active faculty have completed both background and training requirements within the past two years.

Helpful Tips for Faculty

  • Use the same email address for your DCFS training as you use for LSCA correspondence.
  • Save a PDF copy of your certificate for your personal records.
  • If you’ve already completed the DCFS Mandated Reporter Training through another organization (like a church or school), you can submit that certificate to LSCA as long as it’s current within the last two years.

LSCA Training

Beyond meeting state requirements, LSCA provides our own in-depth training for all faculty and volunteers. This training focuses on preparing you for the spiritual, emotional, and practical responsibilities of serving at camp — ensuring that our faculty uphold LSCA’s standards of safety, integrity, and Christ-centered ministry.

The LSCA Faculty Training equips you not just to comply with regulations, but to lead campers toward Christ with wisdom and care. It blends safety instruction, faith formation, and behavioral awareness, so our ministry remains above reproach in all we do.

Why This Training Matters

Camp is powerful — and sacred. LSCA exists to share the gospel and create a safe, loving environment where campers encounter Christ. This training ensures every faculty member understands both the spiritual calling and the serious responsibility that comes with that.

You’ll gain insight into:

  • Why emotional and spiritual safety are as vital as physical safety.
  • The balance between guiding campers toward faith and respecting their individual journey.
  • LSCA’s expectations for conduct, communication, and boundaries.
  • The importance of supervision, awareness, and composure in every interaction.

Every policy, from discipline to year-round contact, exists to protect both campers and volunteers — allowing ministry to thrive in a healthy, Christ-like way.

Training Format

LSCA Faculty Training will be offered in two formats:

  • In-Person Sessions: Conducted at LSCA prior to the camp season.
  • Zoom Sessions: Available for those unable to attend in person.

Exact dates and registration details will be provided closer to the start of the season.
